Writing Thesis Statement
What is a thesis statement?
- A thesis statement of an essay refers to a sentence that provides the writer’s purpose of writing the essay.
- The thesis statement:
• contains the main ideas (3) of the essay;
• is the most important sentence in the essay;
• is the strongest and clearest statement in the essay;
• usually comes at the end of the introductory paragraph of the essay.
- A well-crafted thesis statement will guide the structure and content of your entire essay. It's the foundation upon which your argument is built.
How to write an effective thesis statement?
-Refer to the 'NITRG' technique below and the example.
Example:
Title of the essay:
Students nowadays face greater social pressure compared to the past.
Main ideas:
1) academic pressure
2) conflict in the family
3) peer pressure
Thesis statement:
I agree that students nowadays face greater social pressure compared to the past due to the academic pressure, conflict in the family and peer pressure.

Types of Introductory Paragraph
You have learned how to write a thesis statement. Now, it's time to focus on writing an introduction. How to write an effective introduction? An effective introductory paragraph consists of:

1) Hook: You may begin your introductory paragraph by using 2Q2S technique such as questioning, quotes, statistics and stories (refer to notes and video below for more explanation).

2) Stance: Whether you agree or disagree with the statement (title of the essay). It can be agree, disagree or partially disagree.
​
3)Thesis statement: Contains the main ideas of the essay.
​
